More about Jessica and Jolene:

Jessica and Jolene

Author(s):
Vern  Harden

Jessica and Jolene are 13 year old twin sisters caught up in both the delights and despair of being teenagers. Each struggles to establish her own personal identity as an individual while still retaining the links to family and friends. They speculate what it would be like to not have each other, and they share a sense of impatience, wanting to grow up and make their own decisions. But Jessica, who feels she cannot compete with her sister, begins to resent Jolene. She promises that people will remember her... that she'll be famous someday, for good or bad. Four years pass, and Jessica is far more distant and now running around with a "different crowd." Emotions run rampant, and questions arise within the turmoil. How does a twin become an individual? What choices lead the way to a path not seen? Is it ever too late to turn back? New friends, new experiences, experimenting with life... what can turn sisters in opposite directions? Suddenly, Jessica's promise from four years earlier carries an ominous feeling of foreboding. When she warns Jolene to skip classes the next afternoon "for her own good," the truth about the new group of "friends" she hangs out with starts to reveal itself. In a last desperate and futile moment, the two sisters try to save each other as they realize how tightly linked their destinies truly are. This moving drama is an ideal vehicle to launch a discussion about relationships, as well as about life choices and consequences. It is also an excellent contest piece for two strong actresses.
